In the U.S we throw away over 300 million pairs of shoes in a year. This is a number U.S Department of the Interior released in 2018 which means this could have increased since then. Nike is on a mission to shrink this number. Being eco-conscious is nothing new for the people over at Nike. Since the early 90’s when they started Nike Grind, they’ve had a mission to start reducing their amount of waste. On April 12th Nike announced the next step to their mission of zero waste with a new recycling program through their stores.

The Nike Refurbished program will allow customers to bring in there slightly used shoes to be recycled instead of heading for a life siting in a landfill or incineration. Nike will accept shoes in three different life stages: like new, gently worn, and cosmetically flawed. Once the shoes are dropped off, they are sent to experts that will inspect the shoes and given a condition grade. After the shoes are approved, they are washed and sanitized until they are almost brand new again. Finally, the shoes are put out for sale at a discounted price and are ready for their new life. The new prices for the shoes will be given based on the type of shoe, condition grade, and a few other contributing factors. Good news, the refurbished shoes will still be included in Nike’s 60- day wear test.

Curious as to what happens with the shoes that can’t be refurbished, don’t worry they still get a new life. Shoes that they receive that have no life left in them are still recycled with Nike Grind. Shoes are ground up with other left-over materials which is then used to make anything from a basketball court, furniture, or even a new pair of shoes. Other shoes that still have some life in them but can’t be cleaned up for resale are donated. Nike isn’t finished with their move to zero mission of creating less waste. The next goal on their mission is to make a basketball shoe that is made of 25% recycled material by weight. As of right now their new shoe series Space Hippie is there most sustainably made shoe with its yarn made of recycled plastic bottles, T-shirts, and yarn scraps. Looks like Nike is on a mission to save the plant and to help stop climate change with no plans of stopping anytime soon. Currently they will only have the refurbished shoes at 15 select stores but, don’t worry there is already talk of extending this section to more stores. For a full list of stores selling the refurbished shoes check out Nike’s website.
