Spring is in the air with the sweet smells of flowers and the color slowing coming back to the earth. There is no better way to celebrate the arrive of spring than by starting your flower garden. Bring life and color back to your lawn and garden with fresh new blooms. Not sure what to pick up or what is even blooming right now? No fear, here is a list of 10 spring blooms to look for the next time you are out at a store with a garden department.

Daffodils


With colors of sunshine yellow there is no better way to welcome spring than daffodils. Coming in shades of yellow, white, or orange they will bring color your house. Plant these joyful flowers in gardens that get a large amount of sunshine. Once they are done blooming for the season, they will go dormant and pop back up next spring.

Tulips


When spring arrives every year, tulips are the first to poke their heads out of the ground. Ranging in a large amount of shades including, yellow, white, purple, pink, orange, or red. These sun loving flowers will grow well in gardens and can be planted in containers. When bringing these beautiful flowers inside cut the steams when the petals are still a little green. Although it might seem too early the flowers will still grow when they are in a vase with fresh water.

Pansy


Whenever I see these flowers I think of Alice and Wonderland when she is chatting with the flowers. Cool weather is their favorite time to pop their heads up lasting until late summer. They are also wonderful plants for the fall. Shades rang from yellow, red, blue, purple, pink, mauve, white, orange, or even black. Pansies will grow well in flower beds, window boxes, pots, and hanging baskets that are in sunny locations. Their cousins, Viola, will make for a lovely pairing in the garden.

Sweet Alyssum

Making for a great addition to the garden they will also do great in pots and in hanging baskets. Smelling of sweet honey these flowers come in shades of pink, white, or purple. Great for early spring weather, they enjoy sun filled spots where they will make great ground covering plants. Butterflies will be attracted to their sweet scented flowers making them great entertainment for indoor pets to watch.

Bleeding Hearts


These heart shaped flowers will look phenomenal in gardens in in hanging baskets. This cool weather loving plant will go quit in late summer but will be back next springtime. Bleeding hearts normally come in their classic pink shade but, there has been hybrids created to offer more colors. This shade loving plant will be quite easy to care for and is deer resistant.

Marigold


Marigolds are a garden classic and will look amazing paired with the rest of your flowers all season long. They have so many different varieties providing a large color rang as well as, different flower types. This flower comes in shades of yellow, orange, white, or multi-colored. When planted in a vegetable garden they will help keep bugs and pest at bay. They prefer to be in bright sunny spots and will attract any pollinator with its nectar.

Grape Hyacinth


Known for the “Blue River” at Keukenhof Gardens in The Netherlands this plant will give the appearance of water running through your garden. As you can tell by the bright purple color of the flowers you can see where it gets the name grape hyacinth. Starting with the green leaves the flower will reveal its self early spring and will last until the start of summer. It will make a reappearance back again in fall. Plant this belle shaped flower in gardens, flower beds, or along walkways in areas that receive full sun to part shade.

English Daisy

These colorful pom-pom topped flowers are prefect to bring a burst of spring into your garden. They are great for planting in gardens and in pots. English daisies usually come in shades of pink, blue, and white. They also prefer cooler weather in shady places with moist soil. They will hide during the summer and will pop up again next spring. This particular flower is great for attracting butterflies.

Cosmos


Personally, my favorite spring flower that I look forward to planting every season. They will last into the summer to keep a beautiful flower bed all season long. Cosmos come in shades of rose, white, and pink. Some varieties will come in shades of orange and yellow. These easy to grow flowers grow to be rather tall and prefer to be in sunny gardens.

Cyclamen


Perfect for garden beds and enjoys cool outdoor weather. The flowers typically come in rose, pink, purple, or white shades. They die off in summer but comes back then the weather starts to cool off again. They prefer to grow in sun or part shade. Try to keep them away from locations that get a lot of afternoon sun. They make for a beautiful ground covering plant in the garden beds.

Spring is the time for growth, new life, and color being restored to nature. Head to your local greenhouses or garden and home stores to find plants and flowers to plant. Create a whole garden plan with a beautiful flower design or pick up flowers that look pretty to you. Breakout the shovels and gloves and get to planting.
